57 Action in Ecosystems: Biothermodynamics for Sustainability
Product Description
This book on thermodynamics in ecosystems deliberately promotes a novel approach, by emphasizing the physical concept of action, to complement that of energy. It aims to show that too much attention may have been devoted to energy in biothermodynamics and insufficient attention to action. This relative neglect may now be limiting our capacity to understand how ecosystems function, how they evolved and if they can be sustained, as human demands for food and shelter increase. The idea that an appreciation of action will be needed in future to ensure a proper integration of physical, chemical and biological phenomena essential to sustain and safeguard the Earth's ecosystems is developed. The significance of action is made clear by examination of case studies related to key processes in living systems.

65 Allelopathy in Sustainable Agriculture and Forestry
Product Description
Simply put, allelopathy refers to an ecological phenomenon of plant-plant interference through release of organic chemicals (allelochemicals) in the environment. These chemicals can be directly and continuously released by the donor plants in their immediate environment as volatiles in the air or root exudates in soil or they can be the microbial degradation products of plant residues. The chemicals may interfere with survival and growth of neighboring or succeeding plants. Black walnut, eucalyptus, sunflower, sorghum, sesame and alfalfa are common examples of plants with allelopathic property as well as some staple crops such as rice, wheat, barley and sorghum. Plants can emit chemicals that also discourage insects and pathogens. To maintain sustained productivity, knowledge of this form of plant interference on other plants and on disease causing organisms has been used in agriculture since prehistoric time by manipulating cropping pattern and sequence such as mixed cropping and crop rotation. However, use of numerous agrochemicals including a wide range of herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers and genetically modified high yielding crops has become the characteristic feature of modern industrial agriculture. Not only the sustainability of crop yield is called into question in this form of agriculture, the extensive long-term and often irreversible environmental degradation including ground water contamination and food safety associated with industrial agriculture are now of serious concern worldwide.
The objective is to report on the latest advances in allelopathy by inviting leading scientists to contribute in specific fields. The volume is organized under three major subsections: History of allelopathy, Allelochemicals, allelopathic mechanisms, and bioassays, and Application of allelopathy in agriculture and forestry. An emphasis is place on methodology and application, making it a truly practical reference.

77 Adsorption on Surfaces and Surface Diffusion of Adsorbates
Surface Science is understood as a relatively young scientific discipline, concerned with the physical and chemical properties of and phenomena on clean and covered solid surfaces, studied under a variety of conditions. The adsorption of atoms and molecules on solid surfaces is, for example, such a condition, connected with more or less drastic changes of all surface properties. An adsorption event is frequently observed in nature and found to be of technical importance in many industrial processes. For this reason, Surface Science is interdisciplinary by its very nature, and as such an important intermediary between fundamental and applied research.

91 Advanced Microsystems for Automotive Applications 2008
With the total number of vehicles steadily increasing and soon approaching one billion, the world is facing serious challenges in terms of both safety of road transport and sustainability. Consequently the two major persistent issues for the automotive industry are improved safety and reduced emissions.
The integration of complex microsystems with enhanced intelligence, so-called smart systems has enabled an increase of efficiency of the previously ‘dumb’ internal combustion engine by on average 1% annually during the last 20 years. In the future, smart systems may help to leverage novel powertrain concepts towards the zero emissions vehicle. Particularly for electric vehicles, anticipatory power management and efficient driving assistance by smart systems will be needed to overcome the range limitations. Adaptive systems predicting the energy demand for a chosen route will help the driver to increase energy efficiency. Networked devices for car-to-car communication could help to avoid the waste of energy due to unnecessary braking and accelerating. Intelligent systems for tire monitoring and control deserve special attention since insufficient tire pressure accounts for more than 3% of the efficiency losses in the car. Future electrical in-wheel motors require new miniaturised functionalities enabled by advanced micro- and smart systems.
The conference book in hand is a showroom of activities, the AMAA has been known for during the last 12 years: advanced sensors even including one based on the giant magneto resistance (GMR) effect – a finding for which two European physicists were awarded the Nobel prize, recently – several camera and radar systems making road traffic safer by assisting the driver in recognizing pedestrians and obstacles, and human-machine interfaces based on the recognition of hand gestures - a striking example of how smart systems will further enhance the usability of vehicles and the comfort of driving.
